Tanzania, East Africa

Project Objective - Funding for Peace School for the Deaf in Tanzania, EastAfrica.

Assay Shibanda was a senior teacher and audiologist at the school for the deaf in Dar es Salaam. He owned 12 acres of land in Tanzania which he used for growing crops. In 2008, due to the lack of education options for the deaf in Tanzania, Assay decided to build a school for deaf children on his land. Assay approached Roy Hall (a former lecturer of his and volunteer with V.S.O. Organization) and asked for his help building the school.

Upon ensuring that the land was suitable for establishing a residential school, Roy returned home to England, sold his house and used much of the money from the sale to start the school building project.

With this initial funding, the construction of four classrooms, a temporary dining/kitchen area and outdoor toilets/washrooms were built. A well was drilled and, as the school has no electricity, a water pump was also built. Work to the 45 metre long dormitory was started, which when finished, will accommodate 80 children plus a ro0m for a house mother or a house father, toilets and showers.

In December 2013 World Mercy Fund donated €15,000, which is helping in the completion of the dormitory, dining room, kitchen area and office block which will contain a staff room, a hearing loss testing room, as well as offices, store room and meeting rooms. The funding will also contribute to food for the children and staff salaries.
