Brother John Kizito runs the Bishop Kiwanuka Memorial Primary School in Nakirebe, Uganda. It has 1,084 day and boarding pupils and 23 teachers. This school was established in 1960 in memory of the first black bishop south of the Sahara. However, in 1979 the classrooms were destroyed in the war of liberation from Idi Amin's regime. The local community rebuilt the school with mud and a grass roof, and in 1994 the parents started fundraising to build a more permanent structure. They built cement walls and an iron roof and the bricks were made by the local community. However, the school is without water. All of the children walk a round trip of 4 miles each day to collect water. At night when they need to go outside to relieve themselves, they are in danger of being taken by wild animals and kidnappers. You can view the poor conditions of the school in the gallery above. In February 2012 World Mercy Fund donated €10,000 Euros, for school furniture but now Brother Kizito has sought our help to erect a wire mesh fence to protect the children. We see this as a temporary solution and eventually hope to sink a bore hole so that they have water and can build toilets for the children and staff. The school is visited by an Irish Medical Missionary doctor and she strongly supports assistance to this school. |
Thanks to your much needed help World Mercy Fund have donated over €5,000,000 worldwide this year throughout the following sectors:
